TRISAT Educational Consortium
Each TRISAT institution sponsors a Critical Care Fellowship program, and faculty members from each participate in the TRISAT Critical Care Education Consortium:
- San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC)
- University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Surgical Critical Care Fellowship
- University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio Anesthesia Critical Care Fellowship
Educational links: The Consortium determines the fellow rotation schedule for the academic year, directs the content of the Critical Care Fellowship Lecture Series and selects the content of the Reading Compendium.
The mission of the Critical Care Fellowship is to provide comprehensive training in all aspects of critical care while ensuring state of the art management of trauma, surgical, transplant and burn critical care patients. This is accomplished through a fully integrated consortium of anesthesia and surgical critical care staff at UTHSCSA, SAMMC-S, SAMMC-N, and the US Army Institute of Surgical Research that supports the clinical, research and teaching missions of the Trauma Institute of San Antonio (TRISAT).
Goals of the Fellowship: The Consortium develops and administers components of the integrated schedules and curriculum across the Critical Care Fellowship programs. The goals of the consortium include:
- Develop world class surgical and anesthesia intensivists
- Provide wide breadth of knowledge, teaching and clinical experience including across specialties to trainees
- Provide cross spectrum of surgical, trauma, transplant and burn patients with critical illness
- Foster an environment of mentorship not only for staff and fellows but between fellows and residents
- Provide access to cutting edge medical and surgical practice for the diagnosis and management of patients with critical illness
- Provide an environment to participate in and perform basic science, bench top, and clinical research
TRISAT Education Consortium
The TRISAT educational consortium is comprised of a Director, currently Dr. Deborah Mueller, Program Directors and Coordinators from UT and SAUSHEC Surgical Critical Care and Anesthesiology Critical Care Fellowships; and the Education Coordinator. The consortium shares the following educational components:
1. Video-teleconference Lecture Series (VTC) - VTC Schedule
A twice-weekly critical care lecture series and conference has been
developed and implemented. The formal didactic lectures are given by the
Critical Care Fellows and faculty. The individual Critical Care Fellow
gives six lectures a year. These lectures are presented at one
of the individual sites and simultaneously broadcast by video
teleconference to SAMMC-N, SAMMC-S, and William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso
2. Block Rotations - Rotation Schedule
Fellows rotate through SAMMC-S, SAMMC-N, and UHS SICU. The SAUSHEC Anesthesiology
fellow rotates through Santa Rosa PICU (under Dr. Taylorís faculty supervision) and UHS MICU (under Dr. Anzuetoís supervision)
3. Evaluations - All captured through UT New Innovations for SAUSHEC and UT/UHS fellows.
4. Reading Compendium (online through WebCT / Blackboard program) -

A Critical Care Fellowship reading compendium has been developed and implemented.
The reading compendium comprehensively covers the issues of hemodynamic instability, and complex
multisystem problems. This compendium is required reading and includes a post
test at the completion of each reading block.
The self assessment questions are completed online and serve as a guide to the
acquisition of a critical care fund of knowledge.
The reading compendium consists of required and suggested articles for each of the 13 blocks of the rotation schedule. Twelve original articles for each block are considered required, and fellows must complete faculty-written assessment questions following each article. Completion of reading and questions are mandatory. The compendium resides on the web, using software that enables all fellows to read and/or print articles from any location and to answer and submit answers to questions.
